Sarawak Premier Commends Wetown Electric's Green Energy Initiative in Malaysia
Sarawak State Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg led a government delegation to inspect the 60MW/82MWh Sejingkat battery energy storage power station in Malaysia. He praised its exemplary role in Sarawak’s energy transition. WETOWN ELECTRIC contributed by supplying all DC-side battery cabins and providing ongoing maintenance services, marking a milestone in China-Malaysia green energy collaboration. Launched in December 2024 as Malaysia’s first utility-scale storage project, the station enabled Sarawak Energy to phase out a 150MW coal plant, reducing carbon emissions by over 100,000 tons annually and setting a benchmark for ASEAN’s green energy transition.
The Premier highlighted the station’s integration of biomass and battery storage to optimize Sarawak’s grid and proposed expanding storage solutions to projects like the 50MW Batang Ai floating solar plant and rural mobile storage units for improved power reliability. The visit garnered widespread coverage from Malaysian media such as Malay Mail, Sin Chew Daily, Sarawak Tribune, and Dayak Daily, emphasizing the project’s significance in optimizing Sarawak’s energy structure and promoting green development. Reports noted its potential to enhance Sarawak’s position in ASEAN’s energy market, stabilize the grid, boost renewable energy use, create jobs, and strengthen the renewable energy supply chain.
For WETOWN ELECTRIC, the Sejingkat project is a key step in its global energy storage strategy, showcasing its R&D and manufacturing expertise while laying the groundwork for future Southeast Asian projects.
